Alvaro Escorcia -
Webmonkey Pledge Class 51 Hello, My name is Alvaro Jose Escorcia I'm a Gamma Gamma Gamma member of pledge class 51 and I want to tell you a little bit about my personal history. I was born in the war torn, drug infested, and impoverished third world South American country of Colombia in the Clinica de Neiva around 3 am on February 25th, 1987. I was born as the Secon d of three children (the only boy) to Alvaro and Martha Escorcia, with my dad not present at my birth he was hard at work with Haliburton in the Middle East. At the time of my birth my familoy was living in Oman, a country on the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, and the reason why i was born in Colombia is that no infant of foreign origin would have citizenship if born on Oman's soil. That would be a problem if i had no citizenship, so thank goodnees I am Colombian. Besides myself at the time, my parents also had my older sister Luisa, in Colombia as well 4 years before me. She now is a grad student here at AC and is one of the few that i can truly rely on. After living in Oman for the first year of my life Haliburton transfered my family to Nigiera, which we lived in for the next 3 years in a company owned house with house service and cars provided by the company. It was in these early years of my life that i suffered from seizures, speech delay and motor problems, after medicince and speech and motor therapy i was able to come out of highschool in the top 25% of my graduating class and be awarded scholarships to various colleges, with AC as my prime choice. In 1991 my family moved to the U.S. and had another addition to the family, my little sister Cristina, in 1998; (Houston->Arlington->Houston)and have been here ever since and we the Escorcia family attained dual citizenship in 2000. ALthough I am a first generation immigrant, i show no signs of being a foreigner as i have no obvious foreign accent. Ive pretty much grown up among the Gringos, but with a very high awareness and great pride of where i come from despite what others might think. I attended Catholic private school from 6th grade until senior year of high school and graduated from St. Thomas High School, the oldest all-male private school in Houston (est. 1900). I now attend Austin College here in Sherman and am a Trigam, a History/Political Science double major and Spanish minor, and play hockey for the AC Roller Hockey Club. |
